DDC Tech Day | Application of Electronic Nose in Identifying Different Types of Feed Flavorings
Pick To: Using an odor fingerprint analyzer ( Electronic nose ) , conducting tests on feed flavoring agents with similar fragrances and performing principal component analysis on the collected data. (PCA) , the results show that the similarity of the measured feed flavorings with similar fragrance profiles is 86.09% The electronic nose can effectively distinguish between feed flavorings with similar scents, and it allows for a clear, intuitive determination of similarities and differences.

Currently, the main methods for identifying feed flavoring agents include sensory analysis, gas chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. - Analysis techniques such as hyphenated mass spectrometry are employed. However, the results of sensory analysis are often limited by the subjective conditions of the analysts, making it easy for missed detections and false positives to occur. [1] Gas chromatography analysis and gas chromatography - The coupled mass spectrometry method is scientifically rigorous, but it suffers from poor real-time detection and involves cumbersome procedures. Its key advantage lies in its versatility—it can be applied to the separation and quantification of nearly all compounds. However, a significant drawback is that it requires sample preparation and processing, leading to lengthy analysis times. [2-3] Therefore, there is a growing need for new detection equipment that is more convenient, delivers accurate results, operates reliably, and requires minimal technical expertise from users—thus meeting the demands for rapid and widespread testing.
Electronic nose technology in food [ 4 – 7 ] It has wide applications across numerous fields. An electronic nose is an electronic system that identifies odors by analyzing the response patterns of an array of gas sensors. It can continuously and实时 monitor the odor conditions at a specific location over hours, days, or even months. The working principle of an electronic nose lies in the fact that when sensors interact with odors, they cause changes in the conductivity of the active materials. These signals are then measured as variations in electrical resistance within the circuit. Compared to conventional analytical instruments, the electronic nose provides comprehensive information about the volatile compounds present in the sample—essentially, "fingerprint data." By using an electronic nose to collect and analyze the fingerprint data of feed flavorings, it becomes possible to accurately distinguish between different types of feed flavoring agents.
