Sichuan Agricultural University Graduate Students Attend the "First Class of the Semester"—Hear What Dr. Lü Jirong, Their Senior Alumna, Has to Say

On August 30, Dr. Lu Jirong, Deputy General Manager of DDC, was invited to attend the 2019 Graduate Student Enrollment Education Conference hosted by the Institute of Animal Nutrition at Sichuan Agricultural University, where she delivered a keynote speech titled "Professional Studies and Career Planning." Now sharing the main points of Dr. Lü's report.
I. The Path of Learning: Choice and Effort
Dr. Lü shared with her junior students through her own academic journey that when life reaches a crossroads, one often faces numerous dilemmas—and even moments of confusion—wondering how to make the right choice. She said: Confusion and uncertainty may simply mean our perspective is still too narrow. We should take more time to observe the people around us, seek advice from parents and teachers, and learn from senior students. When you truly feel lost, calm down and focus on fulfilling your responsibilities as a student—study, study, and study again. While mastering your professional knowledge, make frequent visits to the library and actively join campus clubs and activities. Seize every opportunity to reflect on yourself, build resilience, and grow stronger. After all, the ultimate purpose of learning is to ensure that our talents match our dreams, and our abilities align with our ambitions—thus overcoming the confusion and indecision that often hold us back. Never forget your original aspiration, and you'll stay true to your path! Only with a solid foundation of basic knowledge can we make the right choices when opportunities arise—choices that will ultimately shape our lives.
1 In her graduate studies, she advised her junior students: "Cultivate a rigorous and pragmatic approach to research, embrace a collaborative spirit in your learning, and build a social network that transcends disciplinary boundaries. By doing so, you'll not only successfully complete your academic journey but also quickly develop the skills needed to adapt effectively to society."
2 Dr. Lü advocates that, in addition to mastering professional knowledge, students should place great importance on learning how to effectively use tools. She points out that the most significant distinction between humans and ancient apes lies precisely in our ability to wield tools—every step forward in human evolution has been driven by our capacity to create and fully harness these tools. By becoming adept at utilizing tools, we can significantly enhance both our learning and work efficiency. Moreover, it’s crucial to cultivate a diverse skill set, such as learning to drive, developing strong English communication skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and gaining proficiency in computer applications. At the same time, students should strive to strengthen their overall competencies, aiming to become "three-good students" who excel not only academically but also in writing and public speaking—and ultimately emerge as well-rounded professionals highly sought after by society.
3 Dr. Lü also shared that studying at the Institute of Nutrition feels like undergoing a "hellish trial," as the late Mr. Yang Feng once described it—but after three years, you’ll find yourself having reaped tremendous rewards. Gradually and subtly, your logical thinking, innovative capacity, hands-on skills, and learning abilities will all experience a qualitative leap forward. Dr. Lü expressed her gratitude to the Sichuan Agricultural University’s Institute of Nutrition for nurturing her solid professional foundation, instilling in her a resilient character, and equipping her with a strong, professional brand image as well as a vibrant, tightly-knit community of alumni and peers.
Dr. Lü primarily shared her job application experience, work history, and professional achievements. Her application journey turned out to be a profoundly valuable lesson for her. She advised her junior colleagues to thoroughly prepare—whether it’s crafting a compelling resume, choosing appropriate attire, or practicing confident self-introductions—to present their best selves to others. She emphasized that they should avoid repeating the mistakes she made back then. At the beginning of her career, Dr. Lü encountered numerous challenges as she struggled to adjust to the new environment. Spending six months at the experimental site left her feeling disheartened, as the daily routine remained largely unchanged from her student days. When she finally took on actual responsibilities, she realized she was essentially starting from scratch in the workplace—much of what she’d learned in school couldn’t be immediately applied. Instead, she found herself needing to rely heavily on her colleagues for guidance, which only deepened her sense of inadequacy. Meanwhile, her role soon required frequent business trips to interact directly with clients. Not only did she have to navigate complex market challenges and help resolve customers’ issues on the spot, but she also had to cope with the physical and emotional discomforts of prolonged travel. These experiences left her feeling increasingly frustrated and disappointed with her career path. But after Dr. Lü pulled through, he said: When you first enter the workplace, if you're not humble enough to learn, open-minded enough to ask for guidance, or patient enough to reflect and grow, you won't earn your company's recognition—or benefit from its nurturing support and the platform it has built. Given the time constraints, he suggests that younger colleagues who are interested can read "Taste Without End," a book compiled by General Manager Li Xiaobing. P235-240 Page. From the book, one can see Dr. Lü's growth and transformation during his time in the workforce.

Participating as an associate editor in the compilation of "Practical Feed Flavoring Science," this book fills the gap in the field, as there was previously no dedicated monograph on feed flavoring agents. Appointed as an off-campus mentor for the Master's program in Agricultural Extension (Animal Husbandry) at Southwest University of Science and Technology and Southwest Minzu University.
During my time at the company, I participated in research projects focusing on bio-enzymatic technology, the Maillard reaction, acidifiers, functional attractants, and feed flavor enhancers aimed at improving milk flavor. I have also spoken multiple times as a presenter at industry academic conferences, sharing insights on topics such as how regulating sow feed intake impacts production performance, how controlling piglet feed intake affects productivity, the role of feed flavorants in appetite regulation, and integrated approaches for managing sow nutrition—reaching an audience of tens of thousands of attendees. 3 Over 10,000. 2 • Personal Work Reflections
⑴ Opportunity favors the prepared: A diploma is the best key to open doors, your weaknesses point directly to where you should focus your efforts, your competitors serve as the finest teachers, overcoming challenges leads to the greatest growth, having clear goals fuels the strongest motivation, and providing excellent service makes for the best form of leadership.
⑵ How to Become the Most Popular Person: Professionalism is the foundation, quality ensures reliability, capability is the prerequisite, and dedication is the core.
⑶ On the confusion surrounding why girls might feel it’s harder for them to succeed at work: Dr. Lü believes we shouldn’t let traditional Chinese beliefs influence our thinking—specifically, the notion that women are somehow inferior to men. While it’s true that in certain professions, girls may face challenges or perform slightly differently compared to their male counterparts, in most roles that don’t heavily rely on physical strength, women are absolutely capable and competitive. Just look at the outstanding performances of female athletes in every Olympic Games—they speak volumes! In our industry, too, there are countless exceptional female entrepreneurs and technical directors. Even the leader of New Hope, our largest agribusiness enterprise, is a woman. As long as we girls strive to become truly outstanding, employers certainly won’t overlook our talents. Dr. Lü also emphasized: Women must be independent—economic independence is the foundation. Otherwise, their lifelong happiness could easily be led by others. And if they remain dependent, how can they possibly set a practical example for their daughters when it comes to taking charge of their own lives? However, women should not let their studies delay love, marriage, or even having children during critical stages of life, as it’s true that in our society, some outstanding women may put off these major life decisions in pursuit of education and career advancement.
