Information

Recently, Dr. Lei Yan’s research review "Beyond sweetness: The high-intensity sweeteners and farm animals" was included in the SCI journal "Animal Feed Science and Technology" (IF: 2.59).
The review is divided into the following parts:
1. The basic properties of high-intensity sweeteners commonly used on several animals and their use on animals
2. The preference and mechanism of different animals for different high-intensity sweeteners
3. The effect of high-intensity sweeteners on the performance of different animals
4. The relationship between high-intensity sweeteners and glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2)
5. The relationship between high-intensity sweeteners and gut microbes
6. Conclusions and prospects
High-intensity sweeteners are widely used as feed additives, but their effects are often inconsistent. There are many factors that affect the effect of high-intensity sweeteners on animals, such as breed, genetics, stress, diet composition, experimental methods, and the type and dosage of sweeteners. Adding an appropriate amount of sweeteners to the diet can improve the performance of pigs and ruminants. In the early stages of broiler growth, stevioside can improve the growth performance of broilers through immune mechanisms. High-intensity sweeteners play a role in animals. In addition to improving the palatability of feed, some high-intensity sweeteners can also stimulate the secretion of GLP-2, and GLP-2 can indirectly or directly help intestinal development and improve intestinal Barrier function, improve the absorption of nutrients and reduce the occurrence of intestinal inflammation, thereby improving animal performance. At the same time, there are some natural high-intensity sweeteners that are beneficial to the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the intestines, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. The reason may be related to the properties of these sweeteners as prebiotics. Therefore, the mechanism of high-intensity sweeteners on animals needs to be further explored in the future.
